Why refill is cheaper than exchange

Exchange tanks (Blue Rhino, AmeriGas) are sold at a fixed price for a fixed amount — but the swap tank is only filled to about 15 lb of propane in a 20 lb cylinder. Refill stations pump until your tank is full (about 4.7 gallons in a standard BBQ cylinder) and you pay only for what flows in. Typical savings: $5–$10 per fill.

What to bring

Your own propane cylinder, in date and clean of debris. Most stations cap fills at 80% of cylinder capacity (industry-standard safety margin). For RV onboard tanks, drive up; the attendant connects to the ASME tank fitting.
